The Gurugram Cyber Police have busted a fake call centre operating illegally in Sector 30 late on Friday night. Six people, including one woman, were arrested for allegedly committing fraud by posing as bank officials and transferring money through fake mobile applications. Eleven mobile phones were seized from their possession.
According to the police, a complaint was filed on 9 August by a individual who had been cheated by a fraudster impersonating a bank employee offering to redeem credit card reward points. An FIR was subsequently registered at the cyber crime police station, South.
During the investigation, the cyber police team raided the call centre in Sector 30 and found several men and a woman making fraudulent calls. The accused failed to produce valid OSP (Other Service Provider) licences from the Department of Telecommunications or any other requisite agreement or MoU for their operations.
Those arrested have been identified as Ansar Khan (31), Ahzaz (27), Nisar Khan (20), Suraj Kumar (26), Yogendra (29) and Sarita (25), resident of district Almora in Uttarakhand.
During interrogation, the accused revealed that the call centre was owned by a man named Anuj, who occasionally visited the premises. He had allegedly been operating the centre for the past three months.
Explaining their modus operandi, ACP (Cyber) Priyanshu Dewan said: “The accused called people on Anuj’s instructions, introducing themselves as bank representatives. They lured victims by offering to redeem their credit card points and sent them links to fake mobile applications. Once installed, victims were asked to enter their card details and share OTPs, enabling the accused to transfer money. The stolen funds were used to purchase petro cards, which were then sold to taxi drivers to be converted into cash. The fraudsters earned a 10 per cent commission on each fraudulent transaction. Raids are underway to arrest Anuj.”
