Fallen trees, power cuts amid rain keep Gurugram residents on edge
After the rain lashed Gurugram on Sunday, residents of the Millenium City are once again bearing the brunt of the unprecedented weather, which led to the falling of trees and power cuts in the area.
Following the rainstorm, around 50 places witnessed fallen trees, with 33 major complaints having been made to the Municipal Corporation, Gurugram (MCG). Although no major loss was reported owing to the fallen trees, a few vehicles were damaged and roads were obstructed. The MCG, however, had deputed a special horticulture team and 22 trees were removed within three hours.
“After a huge storm last night, we were expecting this kind of damage, so we had already deputed a special horticulture team. We will soon be meeting with RWAs to sensitise them about the ways to deal with storms and minimise losses, especially in case of tree collapse,” said MCG Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya.
The city witnessed major power cuts in nearly 100 areas, with many posh societies witnessing cuts spanning as long as hours.
The residents took to social media to highlight their plight, seeking the state ministry’s intervention in the revamping of Gurugram’s electricity scenario.
The posh DLF Phase 1 saw around eight hours of power cut following the rain.
“Oh, it’s 2025, and welcome to DLF Phase 1, Gurgaon — where a 5-minute drizzle still earns us a generous 8-hour power cut. Because, you know, who needs electricity in the ‘Millennium City’?” wrote a user on X.
Another X user shared a picture of an electricity pole that fell down in DLF Phase 2. “It’s been 10 hours and the state-of-the-art infrastructure is lost in just one rain in Gurgaon’s posh society,” added another X user. Similar power snarls were reported in sectors 4, 40, 43 and 45, and South City 1. Another local complained about having to experience a full day with no electricity supply in Sector 99. “No electricity supply for over 24 hours in Riddhi Siddhi Society of Sector 99, Gurgaon,” the user wrote, adding that water supply in the society was also interrupted and the complaints of the people were falling on deaf ears.
Gurugram DC Ajay Kumar has summoned the DHBVN officials to work out a pre-monsoon strategy to ensure city does not face a similar situation during the monsoon season.
“Power cut during rains is a big issue, which is being raised. We are getting in touch with the DHBVN to undergo pre-monsoon overhauling to ensure that the city doesn’t face power crisis during rains,” said the DC.
JE suspended over waterlogging in Sec 15
A local Junion Enginner (JE) of the MCG, Ravinder Kumar, was suspended over the issue of waterlogging in Gulmohar Park, Sector 15 (Part 2). Recently, MCG Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya visited the park after residents complained of waterlogging in the area and found that it did receive have adequate power supply to run the draining motors.
While orders were issued to increase the power supply, the JE failed to comply, leaving the park submerged. As the pictures of same went viral on social media, the MCG then suspended him.
