While being detained, Tikait criticised the authorities, accusing them of suppressing farmers. “How long will you detain us? If you keep us locked, then with whom will you talk?”

The BKU had convened an emergency meeting on Tuesday at Kisan Bhawan in Muzaffarnagar, led by its chief Naresh Tikait.

The Union decided to back farmers in Noida and Greater Noida who are protesting over land compensation and other grievances. The BKU's youth wing president, Anuj Singh, urged members from western Uttar Pradesh districts to converge at Greater Noida's Zero Point on Wednesday.
