Fix overflow of sewers in Capital, Atishi writes to Chief Secretary

Water Minister Atishi has taken a strong stance against Chief Secretary (CS) for “failing” to address the worsening sewer overflow crisis across the city. In a directive issued on Saturday, Atishi has demanded immediate action and strict accountability for officials whose negligence has exacerbated the problem.

“I have received numerous complaints about sewer overflows from various parts of Delhi, including Patparganj village, Shashi Garden and Khichripur among others,” Atishi said. “The issue is becoming increasingly severe, causing widespread inconvenience and contamination of drinking water. If not addressed promptly, this could lead to a serious public health crisis,” she added.

Atishi criticised the lack of effective coordination between the Urban Development Department, Delhi Jal Board (DJB) and the Finance Department. “Despite multiple review meetings with local representatives and DJB officers, the departments are engaged in a blame game rather than resolving the issue. The people of Delhi are suffering due to this lack of action,” she added.

The Water Minister emphasised that it is the Chief Secretary’s role to ensure coordination and resolve these issues. “As the head of the bureaucracy, the Chief Secretary must address and settle these issues to prevent public hardship,” Atishi asserted. “Repeated instructions have been given, both verbally and in writing, but no adequate action has been taken. This level of negligence will not be tolerated under the Kejriwal government,” she added.
