The Yamuna River in Delhi is swelling rapidly, with the water level reaching 204.14 metres on Sunday, approaching the warning threshold of 204.5 metres.

Although the danger mark has not yet been breached, officials from the Irrigation and Flood Control Department are closely monitoring the situation.

“If the water level hits the danger mark, we will have to issue evacuation advisories for people living in risk-prone areas,” said an official. Rising water could lead to a flood-like situation in low-lying parts of the city, they added.

Officials attributed the surge to sustained rainfall in the upper catchment areas of Uttarakhand and Haryana.
