A joint demolition drive was conducted by the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) and Municipal Corporation, Gurugram (MCG), on the Sector 39/46 dividing road on Monday morning. The departments had received several complaints from citizens regarding rampant encroachment on the service road.

It was found that a large number of illegal rehris and vending carts were operating in close proximity of Unitech Cyber Park. Additionally, the cycle tracks and two-wheeler lanes developed by the GMDA on the master road were being used as illegal parking spaces by cars and motorcycles.

MCG teams had earlier visited the site on four occasions and towed away the illegally parked vehicles and issued warnings to the unauthorised cart owners to clear the area. Despite the directions, they continued to flout the norms and block the service roads, due to which it took approximately 45 minutes up to one hour to cross a stretch of just 500 m.

Taking cognisance of the matter, RS Baath, Nodal Officer for Encroachments in Gurugram, and the DTP of GMDA led a robust anti-encroachment drive.

During the drive, nearly 50 illegal rehris were razed that were operating without any legal permits. Additionally, 28 challans amounting to Rs 15,000 were issued for wrong parking by the traffic police. Furthermore, the commercial establishments in the vicinity were directed to arrange parking for their staff within the premises and not on the service road.

It was found that several cart owners were not even equipped with Aadhaar Cards. Moreover, many cart owners were those who were living in nearby areas. It was also informed by people present on the sites that local mafias function in the area and charge up to Rs 3,000 from the cart owners to operate along this stretch.

“The GMDA is carrying out regular day and night enforcement drives on all such key master and service roads in the city. As per the directions issued by the CEO of GMDA, the authority is working towards removing all such illegal encroachment to clear public land, green belts and improve traffic management in Gurugram. Several more such drives have been lined up to bring positive results within a time-frame of three months,” said Baath.
