Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) president Devender Yadav on Friday lashed out at the BJP-led Delhi Government for allegedly permitting arbitrary tuition fee hike by private schools, calling it a direct attack on poor and middle-class families. He said the steep fee increases — ranging from 20 per cent to as high as 82 per cent — have triggered widespread protests by parents across the city.

Addressing a press conference, Yadav accused the newly formed government under Chief Minister Rekha Gupta of siding with private school cartels.

“Within just a month of coming to power, the BJP Government has allowed private schools to increase fees at will. When the Congress was in power, we never permitted such arbitrary hikes,” he said.

He stressed that good education is a fundamental right of every child and should not be reduced to a privilege for the wealthy. “If reputed private schools are allowed to hike fees unchecked, only the rich and powerful will be able to afford quality education for their children,” Yadav added.

The DPCC chief further claimed that the standard of government schools has significantly deteriorated in recent years, leading to a mass exodus of students from public to private institutions, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The Kejriwal government focused more on construction than on improving academic standards. Now, the BJP seems to be following the same path,” he alleged.

Yadav recalled that during Congress rule, government schools saw an influx of students due to improved standards and facilities. He accused the current regime of being “anti-poor and anti-middle class,” and of facilitating fee hikes that make education increasingly unaffordable.

He urged the BJP Government to reverse the decision, rein in private schools and prioritise enhancing the quality of education in government-run institutions to ensure equitable access for all sections of society.
