GST Inspector nabbed for taking Rs 5,000 bribe

A team from the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), Faridabad, on Monday arrested a female GST Inspector posted at the Office of the District Excise and Taxation Commissioner, Palwal, red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000 in exchange for issuing a GST number to a complainant.

The arrested GST Inspector has been identified as Sumitra, who was previously arrested by the ACB, Panipat, in 2022 for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 2 lakh along with co-accused Excise and Taxation Officer (ETO) Roshan Lal. A senior ACB officer confirmed that a charge sheet in the 2022 case was filed in July that year and the matter remains sub judice.

In the latest case, the complainant alleged that he had applied for a GST number in Palwal. On May 27, Sumitra reportedly contacted him and asked him to visit the GST office. When he reached the office on May 30, Sumitra allegedly pointed out faults in his documents and demanded a cash bribe of Rs 5,000 to process the application.
