Gurdwara panel holds 'fateh march' to mark 240th anniversary of conquest of Delhi by Sikh generals

New Delhi, April 9

The Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) celebrated the 240th anniversary of the conquest of Delhi by Sikh generals Baghel Singh, Jassa Singh Ramgarhia and Jassa Singh Ahluwalia, at the Red Fort grounds last night.

Members of the Sikh community today took out a ‘fateh march’ to commemorate the historical event. It coincided with the 300th birth anniversary of Ramgarhia.

Minister of State for External Affairs Meenakshi Lekhi, present at the event, said, “The heritage and history of the Sikh community is great and glorious, which needs to be taken to every nook and corner of the country and the world and we are striving for it.”

The Sikh army had entered the Red Fort to defeat Shah Alam II in 1783. Gurdwara Sisganj, Gurdwara Rakabganj, Gurdwara Bangla Sahib, Gurdwara Majnu ka Tila and Gurdwara Moti Bagh were built under the agreement of the Sikhs with Shah Alam II.

National Commission for Minorities chairman Iqbal Singh Lalpura lauded the DSGMC for enlightening the public about the historic event. He said, “The revolution of 1857 is considered the first war of independence in the country, but Baba Banda Bahadur ji had fought against the Mughals in 1710.” Ex-DSGMC president Manjinder Singh Sirsa said the country was forgetting its history, but it was heartening that this day being celebrated.
