Gurugram launches real-time traffic alerts with Google Maps
New digital system warns drivers of accidents, displays speed limits to improve road safety
The Gurugram police and Google Maps have launched a real-time traffic alert system to warn drivers if they are approaching an accident or hazardous zone. The system, currently deployed on 129 major roads, also displays speed limits to encourage compliance with traffic rules.
DCP Traffic Dr Rajesh Kumar Mohan said the initiative aims to reduce accidents and raise public awareness about road safety.
“Often accidents occur because drivers travel at high speeds on busy roads. Survival chances are higher when accidents happen at lower speeds,” DCP Mohan added.
A senior police officer said the system would be expanded to more than 200 roads and major junctions by the beginning of next year, covering the entire city under this high-tech alert network. Virtual warning markers will appear on Google Maps at locations identified as accident-prone, helping drivers stay alert.
The move follows alarming statistics showing that 345 people have died and over 580 have been injured in road accidents in Gurugram so far this year. The data highlights the dangers of overspeeding and ignoring traffic rules.
According to police, the riskiest routes include NH-48 (Delhi-Jaipur Highway), Dwarka Expressway, Sohna Road and Golf Course Extension Road.
“With this initiative, Gurugram is the first city in the country where Google Maps and the police are working together to ensure road safety. The system will not only alert drivers to dangerous areas but also play a key role in reducing accidents in the future,” said DCP Mohan.
