Calling this the back bone of the city’s sanitation infrastructure, Gurugram Municipal Corporation Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya said it would be implemented within a month, increasing the facility’s outreach. He clarified that the MC currently collected garbage from homes using 330 vehicles and was not charging any fee.

“Waste can be treated only when it’s properly collected. Currently, one of the biggest challenges, in garbage vulnerable areas, is door-to-door waste collection. Due to a lack of this facility, residents resort to dumping waste on roads, adding to the city’s sanitation woes. We are working towards streamlining and strengthening this basic need of sanitation management,” Dahiya said.

The Municipal Commissioner stated that Garbage Vulnerable Points (GVPs) located on main roads were being relocated. The number of GVPs has been reduced from 282 to 222 so far, and there are plans to reduce this further in the future.

The Municipal Commissioner stated that the city generated approximately 1,200 tons of waste daily, of which approximately 40 per cent was from bulk waste generators (BWGs). The corporation is encouraging these BWGs to ensure waste disposal within their premises as per the Solid Waste Management Rules 2016. He said that several BWGs in Gurugram were doing a commendable work in this direction, and that the remaining BWGs were also being actively engaged. The Municipal Commissioner added that colonies that wished to be included in the BWG category could do so and begin waste management on their own.

Assistant Sanitary Inspectors (ASIs) have been given the responsibility of monitoring the sanitation system and taking action against littering. Ninety new Assistant Inspectors have recently been deployed through HKRNL. These inspectors have issued challans amounting to Rs 19.80 lakh so far, strengthening cleanliness monitoring and curbing littering. To further digitise the challan process, POS machines are being provided from CSR funds.

The Municipal Commissioner appealed the citizens to separate wet and dry waste and to dispose of garbage only via door-to-door carts or trolleys. He emphasised that every citizen played an important role in realising a clean Gurugram.
