In a significant development during the ongoing Delhi Assembly elections, the Chief Ministers of Delhi and Punjab have alleged that the water supply from Haryana to Delhi has been compromised by elevated ammonia levels.

According to a representation submitted to the Election Commission on Monday, the leaders claimed that the increased ammonia content in the water poses a threat to Delhi’s supply and could disrupt essential services during a critical time.

Atishi in a post on X said: “Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and I have complained to the Election Commission on the issue of poisonous water in the Yamuna, and have sought an appointment with them as soon as possible. We will not let this conspiracy of the BJP to make the people of Delhi thirsty succeed.”

Sources said: “The commission on Monday received a representation from the Delhi and Punjab CMs, alleging increased quantity of ammonia in water supply from Haryana to Delhi to adversely impact the supply in Delhi during the ongoing Delhi elections.” The commission has directed the Haryana Government to provide a factual report on the matter by Tuesday at 12 noon, they added.

Meanwhile, Delhi Jal Board CEO Shilpa Shinde has criticised former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s statements regarding water contamination, calling them “factually incorrect, without any basis, and misleading”.

In a letter to the Chief Secretary, Shinde expressed concern that such remarks could lead to fear-mongering among residents and strain relations with neighboring states, particularly those upstream. She urged the Chief Secretary to bring the matter to the attention of the Lieutenant Governor.

“Nothing is a bigger sin than depriving people of water. The BJP is trying to leave the people of Delhi thirsty for its dirty politics. They are mixing poison in the water being sent from Haryana. This contaminated water is so toxic that it cannot be treated by the water treatment plants present in Delhi. The BJP wants to commit mass murder of Delhi residents. We will not let this happen.” Kejriwal alleged.

Delhi CM Atishi claimed that 30 per cent of the city’s population was at risk of water shortage due to high ammonia levels in the Yamuna. She also stated that this contamination was pushing major water treatment plants in Delhi to the brink of closure.
