JNU Stdents’ Union elections 2025-26: Polling underway, result on Thursday

Counting of votes to begin at 9 pm tonight; results expected on Thursday

Polling for the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU) elections began on Tuesday morning, marking the much-anticipated return of vibrant campus politics.

According to the JNUSU Election Committee, voting began at 9 am and will continue till 1 pm, followed by a second session from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm. A total of 9,043 students are eligible to vote in this year’s elections, with women making up 30 per cent of the electorate and men 70 per cent.

As many as 20 candidates are contesting for the four central panel posts – president, vice-president, general secretary and joint secretary. The elections have drawn participation from all major student organisations, including the Left Unity alliance, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), and the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), among others, each fielding candidates in a bid to reclaim political space on campus.

The atmosphere on campus was charged with enthusiasm, as students queued up to cast their votes, holding banners and raising slogans in support of their candidates. Election campaigning over the past week saw intense debates, poster wars and midnight marches reminiscent of JNU’s rich political culture.

Counting of votes will begin at 9 pm tonight, and the results are expected to be declared on Thursday, determining the new faces that will lead one of India’s most politically active campuses.
