New Delhi, February 29

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal accused Lieutenant-Governor (L-G) VK Saxena of obstructing various welfare schemes, including the bus marshal scheme, on Thursday.

Kejriwal’s accusations come amidst a heated debate over the abrupt discontinuation of the bus marshal scheme. During the ongoing budget session in the Delhi Legislative Assembly, the CM highlighted the significant contributions of bus marshals to curb crimes and ensure passenger safety. He attributed the sudden halt of the scheme since November 2023 to alleged threats issued by the L-G to officials involved in its implementation.

Kejriwal cited several instances where bus marshals intervened to prevent crimes, including kidnappings and thefts. He condemned the derogatory language used by the L-G in correspondence with him on Wednesday, labelling it as inappropriate and unbecoming of a constitutional authority.

“From the beginning of 2023, all three departments suddenly changed their stance. The officers were the same, the officers did not change. Suddenly those officers started changing their notation and started writing on the file that this is not the work of Civil Defence Volunteers (CDVs). The work was okay for seven years to eight years, but suddenly the officers of the three departments changed their stance,” he said.

Responding to Kejriwal’s allegations, representatives of the BJP refuted the claims, dismissing them as baseless and politically motivated. They maintained that the L-G’s actions were in accordance with legal provisions and aimed at ensuring accountability and transparency in governance.
