AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday announced to waive off “incorrect and inflated” water bills if the party retains power in the Assembly elections in Delhi.

This was AAP’s sixth welfare promise made in this poll season. Earlier, Kejriwal had announced a welfare scheme for Delhi’s auto drivers, Dr Ambedkar Samman Scholarship, Mahila Samman Yojana, Sanjeevani Yojana and Pujari-Granthi Samman Yojana.

“The BJP has created a mess to the extent that people are now receiving water bills amounting to thousands, and in some cases, even lakhs of rupees every month. This has caused immense distress among the people of Delhi. We cannot stand by and let our citizens suffer due to these inflated and incorrect bills,” said Kejriwal while announcing his sixth “guarantee”.

He said the Delhi Government had been providing 20,000 litres of water for free to every household and over 12 lakh families monthly water bill used to be “zero”. However, Kejriwal alleged that when he was incarcerated in the excise policy case, the BJP did “something behind his back” which resulted in inflated water bills.

“After the elections, the AAP will form the government and we will ensure that these inflated and erroneous bills are waived off. This is my promise and guarantee to everyone. So, there is no need for anyone to worry or be distressed —AAP stands with the people,” Kejriwal said.

Meanwhile, the BJP attacked Kejriwal over the issue of inflated bills and asked him to first clarify the reasons behind not correcting the “incorrect” bills.

“In Kejriwal’s rule, either there is no water in the taps or if it comes, it is black and poisonous, but people are getting bills, not in thousands, but in lakhs,” Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva said.

He said the bills were generated by the Delhi Jal Board which comes under the purview of the AAP government.
