Kejriwal seeks 50 per cent Metro fare concession for students, writes to PM Modi
AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressing his desire to give 50 per cent concession to students in Delhi Metro, which falls under the jurisdiction of both the Centre and UT.
“I want to draw your attention to an important matter. The students of Delhi are largely dependent on Metro to commute to their school or college. To reduce the financial burden on the students, I propose to give a 50 per cent concession to the students in Delhi Metro,” Kejriwal said in the letter.]
Delhi Metro, a 50:50 joint venture between the Centre and Delhi Government, has sparked a discussion about expenditure sharing. An AAP leader suggested that the costs should be split equally between the two governments. Furthermore, the AAP government plans to make bus travel completely free for students.
As the largest and busiest rapid transit system in India, Delhi Metro connects the capital region to satellite cities. Operated by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), a public sector company established in May 1995, the network spans approximately 395.248 km with 289 stations. The metro system extends beyond Delhi’s borders, reaching cities in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana.
Currently, Delhi offers free bus travel for women and discounted passes for students, physically disabled individuals, and senior citizens. However, similar concessions are not available for Delhi Metro commuters, making it less affordable for many regular commuters.
