L-G calls for improving cleanliness in Capital
Lieutenant Governor (L-G) Vinai Kumar Saxena has highlighted the need for significant improvement in Delhi’s cleanliness, emphasising the importance of change in the city’s leadership.
Speaking at the ‘Samvaad with Swachhta Sainiks’ event on Friday, Saxena noted that while certain areas of the city, particularly those managed by the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), are well maintained, there are several parts of Delhi that require substantial attention.
The event, organised by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), was held at the Kedarnath Sahni Auditorium at the MCD headquarters. It brought together sanitation officials and Swachhta Sainiks, with Saxena acknowledging their pivotal role in maintaining the city’s cleanliness and overall health. The Lt Governor emphasised that the MCD, with its 50,000 sanitation workers, bears the primary responsibility for keeping Delhi clean.
Saxena praised the dedication of sanitation workers, particularly during challenging times such as the Covid-19 pandemic, Yamuna floods, and the G-20 summit preparations. He lauded their efforts, noting that they have been the “backbone of Delhi” and that the city’s cleanliness would be unimaginable without their contribution.
Addressing the gathering, the Lieutenant Governor urged the sanitation workers to continue their efforts but also stressed that more work needs to be done. He acknowledged that while progress has been made, many areas of the city still require special attention. He also underscored the importance of the recent leadership change in Delhi, noting that the transformation would only be visible once the city becomes fully clean and green.
Saxena urged the MCD to prioritise areas that have not been given sufficient attention in the past, calling for special drives to make Delhi garbage-free. He likened sanitation workers to soldiers, emphasising their unwavering dedication to duty.
He also spoke about the G-20 summit preparations, mentioning the deployment of 7 lakh dustbins on the roads and the round-the-clock efforts by MCD workers to maintain cleanliness.
Saxena encouraged the residents of Delhi to actively contribute to cleanliness efforts, stating, “We have to make Delhi the most beautiful capital of the world.” He urged that while taking big decisions may instill fear, it is wrong not to take action out of fear. He expressed his belief that with sincere efforts, Delhi can achieve its goal of being clean and beautiful.
Delhi Mayor Mahesh Kumar also acknowledged the hard work of sanitation workers and praised their dedication to keeping Delhi clean. The event concluded with a renewed commitment from MCD officials and Swachhta Sainiks to work towards a cleaner and greener Delhi.
