In a major step toward transforming river-based tourism in the Capital, a high-level inspection was conducted at Sonia Vihar on Tuesday to review preparations for Delhi’s first-ever cruise service on the Yamuna river. The inspection was jointly carried out by Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, Water Minister Parvesh Verma and Tourism Minister Kapil Mishra.

Senior officials reviewed progress on key components of the project, including jetty construction, safety mechanisms, passenger amenities and route planning for the upcoming cruise service. The authorities said the project was advancing rapidly with coordinated efforts between the Central Government, the L-G’s office and the Delhi Government.

Mishra said the cruise service would mark a historic turning point in Delhi’s tourism landscape. “The first-ever cruise service on the Yamuna will give Delhi a new identity. It will strengthen the tourism-based economy and generate new employment opportunities,” he said, adding that the initiative reflected the newfound confidence of New Delhi.

The proposed water transport corridor between Sonia Vihar and Jagatpur is designed not only to promote tourism but also to raise public awareness about the river and support environmentally sensitive mobility.
