L-G visits slum areas in Delhi, says ‘hellish living conditions’
Lieutenant Governor (L-G) VK Saxena visited several areas in Delhi on Sunday, highlighting the “hellish living conditions” of residents. Saxena shared images of open drains and poor sanitation while noting complaints from residents about high electricity bills and inadequate power supply.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Lieutenant Governor called on former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and current Chief Minister Atishi to visit the affected areas and take immediate action to address the issues. “The stinking water accumulated in the alleys and streets is not rainwater, but from overflowing sewers. The women narrating their problems are from Delhi, not any other state,” Saxena said after visiting Rangpuri Pahari in south Delhi and Kapashera in southwest Delhi, accompanied by South Delhi MP Ramvir Singh Bidhuri and various officials.
Residents of these areas complained about power outages lasting 8-10 hours daily, erratic water supply, and inadequate garbage disposal services. Many also expressed frustration over receiving high electricity bills, despite the Delhi government’s claims of providing free power.
“I have assured of a cleanliness drive starting tomorrow, and I will personally monitor these efforts so that it can be ensured that the residents at least get basic services,” Saxena stated. “I urge the former Chief Minister, Chief Minister, and ministers concerned of the Delhi government to visit these areas and see the hellish conditions. They must take immediate steps to improve this pitiable state of affairs. Let’s come together and make Delhi great again.”
Responding to Saxena’s social media post, AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal expressed gratitude. “I thank the Lieutenant Governor from the bottom of my heart. We will address all the shortcomings he has identified. He went to Nangloi-Mundka road and pointed to potholes; we are getting that road fixed. We will get the areas he visited today cleaned. I urge him to point out the shortcomings, we will resolve them,” Kejriwal said.
Later in the day, CM Atishi visited Rangpuri and spoke with local residents. “I want to thank the Lieutenant Governor for drawing our attention to problems here. He must inform us about any problem anywhere in Delhi. The AAP government, with the guidance of Arvind Kejriwal, will resolve them,” she assured.
