Delhi’s Leader of Opposition in the Municipal Corporation Raja Iqbal Singh filed a contempt petition in the Supreme Court on Friday against Mayor Shelly Oberoi for allegedly violating the court’s directives on conducting the Standing Committee election. The petition comes after the Mayor postponed the election scheduled for September 26, which was meant to fill a vacant seat on the committee following the election of BJP’s Kamaljeet Sehrawat to Parliament.

The Supreme Court, in an order dated August 5 had directed the immediate election of a new member to the MCD’s Standing Committee, but the Mayor adjourned the meeting, citing a dispute over the Municipal Commissioner’s order banning mobile phones during the election process. This postponement prompted a directive from the L-G hold the election immediately. However, the Mayor and AAP councillors boycotted both the rescheduled election meetings.

Singh criticised the Mayor’s actions, stating, “The Mayor’s decision to adjourn the election meeting is a blatant disregard for the Supreme Court’s order. There was no constitutionally valid reason for the delay, and it is clear that the AAP is deliberately obstructing the democratic process.” The petition is expected to be taken up by the apex court on Monday.
