The Cyber Cell of the Central Police Station has arrested a man in connection with an online fraud involving Rs 14 lakh, carried out via the Telegram app in December last year. According to the police, a woman from Surya Vihar Part-3, Tilpat, filed a complaint stating that she lost the money while trying to complete a task on the Telegram app after being contacted by an unidentified caller.

The woman reported that she was asked to deposit Rs 14.02 lakh into unknown accounts in order to secure the investment made through the app.

She was initially lured into investing after the person on the other end of the line returned Rs 1,500 and Rs 3,900 for her investments of Rs 1,000 and Rs 3,000, respectively.

As the woman continued to invest Rs 15,000, she was eventually unable to withdraw her funds. She was then asked to deposit an additional Rs 42,500 to “unfreeze” her account.

Realising she had been scammed, she had already transferred a total of Rs 14,02,500 before the call ended with no further response from the fraudster. The app, through which the fraud was conducted, had been downloaded via a link sent to her WhatsApp by the accused.

The police registered a case and launched an investigation, which led to the arrest of the accused on Thursday. He has been remanded to three days of police custody for further questioning, according to the police officials.

In a related incident, the Cyber Crime Police Station of Ballabgarh had earlier arrested three individuals in a similar fraud case involving Rs 10.79 lakh, which was also carried out through the Telegram app. That crime was committed around three months ago.
