According to the police, the incident took place on August 16, when Singh’s son-in-law Sandeep arrived at his house in Ghazipur’s Haroli Extension, demanding to take his wife Nisha back. Nisha came to her parental home after a dispute with Sandeep on the August 15. When Singh refuted, Sandeep allegedly poured petrol on him and set him ablaze. The police formed a team to investigate the case. Investigation revealed that Sandeep had a history of violent behaviour and substance abuse. He had previously attempted to open a gas cylinder at home and had physically assaulted his mother.

Sandeep, who worked as a gardener at Modern School in Vijay Nagar, Ghaziabad, had been absent from work for 10 days prior to the incident.

The police had alerted the school and kept a watch on Sandeep’s movements. He was arrested on August 19 when he was spotted in the area.
