A 38-year-old man allegedly shot himself with a country pistol on Sunday morning, the police said on Monday.

The deceased, identified as Prashant Kaushik, shot himself on the right side of his head using an illegal country-made pistol.

According to a senior police official, a PCR call was received at the Prem Nagar police station around 10 am about the incident.

“During inquiry, it came to light that Prashant Kaushik, a resident of Prem Nagar II, Delhi, was working as a lathe machine (kharad) operator. He committed the act before his wife and two children,” the officer said.

Kaushik, who was under financial distress, was consuming liquor at home, when he shot himself on the right side of his head, it added.

Crime and forensic teams visited the spot and collected evidence. “He was stressed due to financial issues. He had loans and did not have regular work for over a month,” the police officer said, adding, “We are also investigating where he procured the illegal pistol from.”

“No suicide note has been found so far, and the family members have not raised any suspicion,” the official added.

The police have initiated legal proceedings regarding the possession of an illegal firearm.
