The Delhi Police arrested a wanted criminal, who was involved in 27 cases, including murder, robbery and sexual harassment, after a brief exchange of fire here, officials said on Friday.

The accused has been identified as Sher Khan, alias Sheru (28), a resident of Narela. “He is an active ‘bad character’ of the Narela police station and is a desperate hardcore criminal,” the police said.

Additional CP (Crime Branch) Sanjay Kumar Sain said the accused was wanted in a firing incident in the Narela area, which went viral on social media.

“The family of Sheru is having rivalry with one Javed’s family who had also opened fire on the same day - December 17, 2014,” he said.

Sher Khan, a bootlegger and illicit liquor supplier, has two brothers – Shoaib and Sohail. The official said, “Earlier, his younger brother Shoaib was murdered by Javed’s younger brother Naved. While Javed has four brothers. Among them, Junaid had also attacked Sher Khan”.

Amid a longstanding family rivalry, Sher Khan and Javed’s family were engaged in cross-firing wherein a 10-year-old sustained bullet injuries.

A case was registered under Sections 109 (1) (attempt to murder), 3(5) (common intention), 115 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 115(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Sections 25 and 27 (use of weapons) of Arms Act against Javed and his family on the complaint of Soni, wife of Sher Khan. Another case was registered under Sections 115(2), 126(2) (wrongful restraint), 332(c) (house-trespass in order to commit crime) and 3(5) of the BNS against Sher Khan and his family.

Later, Sections 25 and 27 of the Arms Act were added to the case after a video went viral in which Sher Khan and his brother were seen firing with a pistol, the police said.

Khan’s brother Sohail had already been arrested and sent to judicial custody. A non-bailable warrant was issued against Khan.

Based on human and technical surveillance, he was located in the Rohini area. “Sher Khan was seen coming on a scooter around 5:40 pm on March 6. When he was signalled to stop, he opened fire at the police team. The police fired a warning shot, but he didn’t surrender. The police fired a shot in self-defense, injuring him on his right leg,” Sain said.

The police recovered two live cartridges from his possession.
