In line with Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s directive for ministers to conduct on-ground inspections to ensure good governance, Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa carried out a detailed review of traffic congestion and construction projects along the Gurugram-Delhi Highway from Dhaula Kuan to Shiv Murti Interchange on Saturday.
During the visit, the minister was accompanied by senior officials from the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), Public Works Department (PWD), National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Airport Authority of India, and Delhi Traffic Police. The inspection focused on assessing the impact of ongoing construction projects on air quality and traffic movement.
Sirsa pointed out infrastructural flaws at key locations such as Mahipalpur Flyover and Rohtak/Chandigarh Flyover, which contribute to persistent traffic congestion. He highlighted the zig-zag traffic flow at Rajokri crossing, where multiple roads intersect, leading to frequent bottlenecks. He directed NHAI to assess the need for additional diversions and submit a detailed plan in the coming days.
At the under-construction Shiv Murti Interchange and Airport Underpass, the minister inspected dust control measures and pollution compliance. He expressed concern over the lack of green belts and inadequate dust mitigation efforts. Several construction sites, he noted, had been left uncovered, and there was no regular sprinkling of water to control dust pollution. He directed DPCC officials to take strict action against violators by imposing penalties under government norms.
Emphasising the direct link between traffic congestion, PM 2.5 levels, and overall air quality, Sirsa stressed that smooth traffic flow, better diversions, and green belt maintenance along highways could significantly reduce pollution. He instructed NHAI and PWD officials to evaluate the feasibility of the Shiv Murti Interchange, considering the expected volume of traffic that will pass through the corridor.
Additionally, the minister directed NHAI and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to work in coordination to maintain and expand the green cover along the highway. He reaffirmed that ensuring a smooth traffic flow on the Gurugram-Delhi Highway was a top priority to curb rising pollution levels.
Accompanying the minister, MLA Kailash Gahlot echoed the concerns and emphasized a coordinated approach among departments to address pollution and traffic issues. He stated that strict instructions had been issued to all parties responsible for contributing to dust pollution along the highway.
This inspection underscores the Delhi Government’s commitment to addressing infrastructural flaws, improving traffic management, and reducing pollution levels. Officials plan to reconvene for a review meeting soon to assess progress and implement further measures as needed.
