Marginal dip in serious crimes in Capital in 2024: Police
The latest data released by the Delhi Police on Saturday showed hardly any reprieve from serious offences including murder, robbery, riot, and crimes against women as compared to last year’s data.
However, crimes like burglary, fatal accidents, narcotics and excise related cases rose, according to data. Meanwhile, other serious offences like attempt to murder, extortion, cyber crimes and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) were not mentioned in the data.
The data claimed that crimes under the Indian Penal Code saw a dip from 3,25,954 in 2023 to 2,76,894 cases in 2024.
The cases of murder saw an insignificant dip by just two cases from 506 in 2023 to 504 last year, which is a drop of only 0.39 percent. Similarly, robbery cases dipped by 8.7 percent from 1,654 in 2023 to 1,510 in 2024. Cases of rioting went down from 44 to 33, snatchings from 7,886 to 6,493 and cases of vehicle thefts from 40,045 to 39,976, the data revealed.

Crimes against women which the data revealed that rape cases reduced to 2076 in 2024, in 2023 it was recorded at 2141. A significant dip was witnessed in 2020 – 1699. Molestation cases also reduced from 2345 in 2023 to 2037 in 2024. Eve teasing cases reduced marginally from 381 to 362 in 2024.
Meanwhile, fatal accidents increased by five percent – 1432 in 2023 and 1504 in 2024. While, simple accidents saw a dip from 4,283 and 4,069 in 2024.
Cases under the Arms Act remain slightly unchanged from 3,579 in 2023 to 3,526 in 2024, similarly cases filed under the gambling Act was recorded at 3556 in 2024 and 3534 in 2023. While, Excise Act saw an increase from 5951 in 2023 and 6,443 in 2024. Cases related to narcotics, registered under the NDPS Act (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act) also significantly went up from 1,325 to 1,789, the data added.
Kidnapping for ransom and cases of dacoity in 2024, however, remained same as recorded the previous year at 23 dacoities and 13 kidnapping for ransom incidents. Meanwhile, both these crimes, the data shows, have increased from the year 2022.
