MCD, IIT Delhi hold workshop on solid waste management
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi), organised a workshop on solid waste management today. Titled “Empowering Delhi for a Greener Future”, the workshop aimed at equipping citizens, institutions and civic bodies with practical strategies and innovations for effective waste management.
Held at IIT Delhi, the event saw participation from Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh, MCD Deputy Commissioner (South Zone) Dilkhush Meena, IIT scientists, senior MCD officials, RWA members, students and environmental experts from across the city.
Speaking on the occasion, the Mayor reiterated the BJP-led MCD’s commitment to transforming Delhi into a “Clean, green and beautiful” city. He underlined the corporation’s ongoing efforts to improve civic amenities and enhance community involvement in waste reduction and environmental preservation.
In his inaugural address, Deputy Commissioner Dilkhush Meena stressed the need for citizen engagement, saying, “Our mission is to work together with citizens to achieve a cleaner and greener Delhi through active community participation.” He urged attendees to implement workshop learnings in daily life, especially in the area of waste segregation at the source.
A key highlight of the event was the launch of a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) manual for creating ‘Zero Waste and Plastic Free’ institutions. A monthly newsletter was also unveiled to promote awareness and share updates on waste management practices across the city.
Dr B J Alappat, professor at IIT Delhi, delivered a technical session emphasising that segregation at source is critical to solving the capital’s waste crisis.
He, along with other experts, discussed the challenges in ensuring community compliance and shared best practices adopted in other cities and institutions..
