Delhi MC mandates registration for bulk waste generators
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) announced the mandatory registration and compliance of bulk waste generators (BWGs) in accordance with the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules-2016. The move is aimed at promoting sustainable waste management practices, reducing the pressure on landfill sites and ensuring proper disposal of large quantities of waste.
Under the new regulation, all entities producing more than 100 kg of waste daily, including government departments, local bodies, public sector undertakings and private institutions, must register with the MCD. The registration process can be completed easily through the ‘MCD 311’ app, which is available on both Android and iOS platforms.
BWGs are now required to segregate waste at the source, process wet waste on-site, and ensure that dry and residual waste are handed over to authorised MCD waste collection agencies. To facilitate this, the MCD has set up a dedicated team of officers to oversee the registration process, monitor BWG operations and conduct regular inspections to ensure compliance with the SWM Rules-2016.
The Supreme Court of India has emphasised the need for strict adherence to these waste management regulations and ordered that violators be penalised under the provisions of the SWM Bylaws-2017. The MCD has confirmed that it would take firm action against any non-compliance.
The MCD called on all eligible waste generators to register as soon as possible and adopt responsible waste management practices. Detailed guidelines and registration information can be found on the official MCD website or at the DEMS and Health Department in respective zonal offices
