An order issued by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has directed school heads to depute teachers for PM Narendra Modi’s rally and inaugural programme scheduled for August 17 at Rohini Helipad Point in New Delhi.
The order states that attendance of deputed teachers is “mandatory” and calls for strict compliance by all concerned. Teachers were instructed to report at 7.15 am at designated venues, from where buses would leave at 7.30 am for the event.
Signed by the Drawing and Disbursing Officer of the Education Department, Central Zone, the directive is marked to DCs, Deputy Directors of Education and school heads, asking them to ensure punctuality and discipline of deputed staff.
Although the order does not explicitly mention the rally’s purpose, it coincides with PM Narendra Modi’s event in Delhi on Sunday, where he is scheduled to inaugurate two major highway projects worth nearly Rs 11,000 crore — the Delhi section of the Dwarka Expressway and the Alipur-Dichaon Kalan stretch of the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II). The rally is being billed as a showcase of the government’s infrastructure push and its vision to transform connectivity in the NCR.
The AAP alleged that the BJP was coercing government employees, including MCD teachers, sanitation staff and vendors, to fill crowds at the PM’s rally. Delhi AAP state president Saurabh Bharadwaj termed it an example of “dictatorship” and claimed that Delhiites were unwilling to attend voluntarily.
