The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has successfully eliminated 28 garbage vulnerable points (GVPs) across the city and invited proposals to install waste-handling equipment at these locations, AAP-led MCD officials said on Monday.

Beautified with paintings, plants

  • In the Karol Bagh zone, three out of 14 garbage vulnerable points have been beautified with paintings, potted plants and bins.
  • The Municipal Corporation has invited proposals to install waste-handling equipment like fixed compactor transfer station machines.

Addressing a press conference here, Mayor Shelly Oberoi said MCD zones are making significant strides in improving sanitation. “Officials in various MCD zones have been instructed to appoint nodal officers to oversee the elimination and beautification of the remaining GVPs,” Oberoi said.

A meeting with the deputy commissioners of the 12 MCD zones was held to review the progress in clearing GVPs. The Mayor highlighted that more GVPs have been cleared compared to last year. “In the West Delhi zone, seven out of 12 GVPs have been eliminated, and two minor points now see garbage collected within 24 hours. Similarly, in the Karol Bagh zone, three out of 14 GVPs have been beautified with paintings, potted plants and bins,” she added.

In the Shahdara South zone, 14 out of 15 GVPs have been cleared, while in the South Delhi zone, three out of 33 GVPs have been beautified, and work is underway to clear the remaining points. The Central Delhi zone has eliminated one out of 17 GVPs, with garbage from two to three points being collected within 24 hours. The city SP zone reportedly has no major GVP points.

Oberoi also announced that proposals to install fixed compactor transfer station (FCTS) machines for solid and liquid waste handling were being invited. “In areas under MCD’s jurisdiction, these machines will be installed. For lands managed by other agencies like DDA, we will hold talks to get them installed,” she said.

In the Rohini zone, 10 FCTS machines are required to address 27 GVPs and make the area free of secondary collection centres, or ‘Dhalao ghar’. In the Narela zone, there is only one major GVP point with daily garbage collection.

Oberoi emphasised the collaborative effort between officials and the public in reducing GVPs. “We have instructed officials to appoint nodal officers in every ward to oversee garbage collection and ensure beautification. With the support of the public, we have significantly reduced the number of GVPs compared to last year,” she noted.

However, the Delhi BJP criticised the AAP government’s efforts, with Leader of the Opposition and former Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh accusing the AAP of deteriorating the city’s cleanliness system. “During the municipal elections, the AAP guaranteed to remove the garbage mountains in Delhi, but even after more than a year and a half, these mountains remain unchanged,” Singh said.
