The implementation of four new labour codes across the country was hailed as a major reform by Delhi Labour Minister Kapil Mishra, who described the decision as “a highly effective and forward-looking step taken in the interest of workers.” Issued by the Central Labour Ministry, the new codes aim to reinforce dignity, safety and social security for India’s workforce.
According to Mishra, the new framework reflects the Central Government’s commitment to a “secure, dignified and more organised working environment” and marks a comprehensive transformation in labour welfare. He said the Delhi Government had issued instructions for the strict implementation of all provisions in the national capital.
Highlighting key provisions, Mishra stated that the new codes would ensure a guaranteed minimum wage for all workers and make appointment letters mandatory for youth, enabling greater transparency in employment. He said, “Women will now receive equal pay for equal work, thereby strengthening institutional gender equality in the workplace.”
Mishra also said the Delhi Government would soon begin implementing all major provisions in the interest of workers. Under the new rules, fixed-term employees will become eligible for gratuity after one year of service, and workers above 40 years of age will receive free annual health check-ups. He termed this an important step towards preventive health care.
Emphasizing the dignity of labour, he said, “Workers performing overtime will now receive double wages,” adding that 100 per cent health protection had been ensured for those employed in hazardous categories. He noted that aligning labour reforms with international standards would make India’s framework more modern, competitive and just.
Mishra said these reforms would accelerate progress toward ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’ and bring renewed momentum
to transparency, safety and social justice in
workplaces.
