Delhi Lieutenant Governor (L-G) VK Saxena on Tuesday took part in a “zero tolerance” programme against drugs in which drugs worth Rs 1,600 crore in the international market were destroyed.

A total of 10,631.745 kg of drugs were destroyed as per the procedure at the incinerator located at the SSI Industrial area, GT Karnal Road, near Jahangirpuri, an official said.

“To fulfill the vision envisaged by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Government of India is vigorously pursuing the policy of “zero tolerance” towards drugs. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has time and again conveyed his resolve to root out this menace and has constantly emphasised to take stringent action against all drug traffickers and eradicate this evil from our country,” said Sanjay Bhatia, Additional Commissioner of Police, Crime.

“The campaign against drugs is being sincerely implemented by the Delhi Police under the guidance of LG VK Saxena and under the leadership of Commissioner of Police Sanjay Arora,” he added.

According to a notification of the Government of India, Ministry of Finance (Department of Revenue), and the order of the Supreme Court, various committees were formed by the Delhi Police to destroy the illegal drugs recovered from drug smugglers and these committees took part in the cases from year 2009 to 2023.

Cannabis, heroin, hashish, cocaine, doda post and psychotropic substance etc were the main illegal drugs destroyed, officials said.
