Nuh police foil smuggling bid, nab two after gunfight

Nuh police arrested a notorious criminal and his accomplice after a brief encounter on the Bichor–Indana road late on Tuesday night. The main accused sustained a bullet injury to his leg during the exchange of fire and was admitted to hospital.

According to the police, the injured accused has been identified as Abid, a resident of Bichor village, while his accomplice is Jahid Hussain of Khainchtan village in Nuh district. The injured is currently undergoing treatment and the police are questioning Jahid.

The main accused was wanted in around a dozen cases, including robbery, attempted murder, cow smuggling, illegal possession of weapons and murder. A motorcycle and an illegal firearm were recovered from the spot. During the exchange, an ASI narrowly escaped when a bullet struck his bulletproof jacket.

Jitender Rana, ACP of Punhana, said a CIA team from Punhana was patrolling Indana road when it received information that the accused were crossing the area on a bike with the intention of smuggling cows. “Acting on the information, police put up a barricade on the road. As soon as the accused reached the spot, they tried to flee by taking a U-turn, but their bike skidded. Finding himself cornered, Abid opened fire on the police. A bullet struck ASI Suraj’s bulletproof jacket. In retaliatory action, Abid was hit in his right leg and fell down. Both Abid and Jahid were then apprehended,” said ACP Rana.

“As per police records, Abid is a notorious criminal of the area, and more than 12 cases are registered against him at Bichor police station for serious crimes such as murder, attempt to murder, attack on police, cow smuggling, violations of the Arms Act, robbery, and extortion. In 2020, he was booked for cow smuggling and the Arms Act, followed by assault and rebellion the same year. A case under the POCSO Act and for kidnapping was registered in 2022, and several cases under the Arms Act were filed in 2023. A sensational murder case was registered against him in January 2023 and he had been absconding from police,” said DSP Rana.
