The Delhi Police have re-arrested a 59-year-old murder convict, Kiran, who jumped parole around nine years ago, officials said on Thursday.
Kiran, convicted in 2007 for kidnapping and murdering a boy in 2004 in Narela, was sentenced to life imprisonment. He was granted a two-week parole in January 2016, during which he disappeared. He was on the run for the past around nine years.
The police said Kiran was living under a fake name Kamal, alias Pehlwan, and worked as a labourer in various locations, including brick-kilns, to avoid detection. He frequently changed his residence.
“Over the years, multiple teams conducted raids across Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Punjab to trace him. He meticulously planned his escape, but our relentless pursuit paid off,” said a senior police officer.
The breakthrough came when the police came to know about Kiran visiting his native village in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh. Acting on the information, a team was dispatched, leading to his arrest.
DCP (Crime) Ravi Sharma said: “This was a challenging case as the accused had created a new identity and lived an extremely discreet life. He avoided detection for years by frequently moving and staying in remote locations. However, consistent efforts by our teams ensured his capture.”
Kiran was convicted of a brutal crime that shook the Narela area in 2004. He, along with accomplices, kidnapped a boy and demanded a ransom of Rs 2 lakh. When their demands were not met, they killed the boy.
“The victim’s family kept on seeking justice,” said another police officer.
