Panel invokes GRAP III, IV curbs as AQI turns ‘very poor’
Over 300 flights delayed
Dense fog also disrupted flight operations. Over 300 flights were delayed, six were diverted and departures were briefly halted at the Indira Gandhi International Airport. Train services also suffered significant delays, while reduced visibility slowed road traffic across Delhi and nearby cities
After dense fog engulfed Delhi and surrounding areas on Wednesday, accompanied by a sharp deterioration in air quality, the Commission for Air Quality (CAQM) invoked measures under Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) III and IV.
The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi rose from 275 on Tuesday to 396 (very poor) on Wednesday.
By 6 pm, the AQI reached 396, with projections suggesting it could breach the critical 400 mark. In response, the CAQM invoked Stage III and Stage IV of the GRAP in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR).
These measures, which were previously relaxed, were reinstated to curb the worsening air quality. The measures include restrictions on vehicles such as banning BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel cars in Delhi and neighboring districts.
Trucks carrying essential goods or running on cleaner fuels are allowed limited access to the capital, while others are prohibited. Schools have been instructed to shift classes to a hybrid mode, with physical and online options for students, especially in Classes 10 and 12.
Authorities are also exploring work-from-home arrangements for government and private employees.
