Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva has voiced strong criticism against the Delhi Government’s budget for the fiscal year 2024-2025, describing it as “misleading and ineffective” in addressing the needs of the people.
Insufficient allocation for civic body: MC LoP
- Raja Iqbal Singh, Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Municipal Corporation, criticised the budget as a collection of false promises, particularly highlighting the insufficient allocation for the MC
- Singh expressed disappointment over the meagre allocation of Rs 8,423 crore to the MC, stating that it remained unchanged from previous year
- He emphasised the pressing need for timely payment of pensions and salaries to employees, citing arrears amounting to around Rs 2,000 crore
- “The budget of the Delhi Government has disappointed one and a half lakh employees of the Delhi MC because this year too they will have to worry about salary and pension,” remarked Singh
Sachdeva’s remarks came amid the unveiling of budget by the government, which has been touted as a significant electoral move ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Sachdeva highlighted various shortcomings in the budget, emphasising a gap between the government’s claims and the “ground reality”. He pointed out that while the government boasts about significant allocations for sectors like education and health, the budget fails to deliver on its promises of development.
“The budget presented by the government is nothing but a political manoeuvre aimed at garnering votes, with little substance in terms of actual development projects,” said Sachdeva.
He also questioned the government’s financial projections, particularly the decrease in anticipated revenue despite a rise in per capita income and total budget allocation. “People of Delhi want to know from Finance Minister Atishi that when per capita income and budget amount both are rising in Delhi, how the revenue is decreasing,” he said.
He also criticised the government’s handling of key issues such as market development, infrastructure and welfare schemes. He accused the government of failing to deliver on its promises, citing instances where proposed projects remained unimplemented or inadequately executed. “The Delhi Government should stop misleading residents and concentrate on actual development of the city,” the BJP leader said.
