Polling smooth, peaceful in national capital: Cops

The Delhi Police on Wednesday said they ensured smooth and peaceful polling in the national capital on Wednesday, officials said.

Officials said no major incident was reported at any of the polling stations. The police responded promptly to PCR calls regarding the violation of the model code of conduct (MCC) and legal action was undertaken, wherever needed.

Special Commissioner of Police, (SPN-Assembly election) Devesh Chandra Srivastava said: “All officers were actively deployed on the ground and teams have responded promptly to complaints of MCC violations.”

He also shared that on poll eve, around Rs 23 lakh in cash, six illicit firearms and 21 cartridges and 4,000 litres of illicit liquor were seized. As many as 226 people were taken for preventive arrest under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).

A minor scuffle broke out between AAP and BJP workers at a polling booth in the Seelampur Assembly constituency. There was a ruckus at a polling booth in northeast Delhi’s Seelampur as a woman voter alleged a fake vote was being cast in her name leading to heated arguments.

The BJP alleged that the AAP was indulging in bogus voting by bringing in ‘burqa-clad’ women to cast votes on behalf of others.

“BJP candidate from the Seelampur constituency levelled the allegations of bogus voting against AAP candidate at Aryan Public School, Jafrabad voting centre. Supporters of both parties started sloganeering. Police officers reached the spot and sorted out the matter. Situation is completely under control. No complaint has been lodged by any side so far,” an official said.

Meanwhile, DCP Shahdara Prashant Gautam said a complaint was received from Vishwas Nagar around 12 pm wherein verbal exchanges took place between supporters of BJP candidate Omprakash Sharma and AAP workers. “As per local enquiry, the altercation arose when AAP activists called some voters to their table while they were heading towards BJP supporters, leading to objections and heated words. No formal complaint has been received so far. Further enquiry is underway,” the DCP said.
