Prashant Kumar Singh, a 1993-batch IAS officer, has been appointed as the Chief Secretary of the strife-torn state of Manipur.
On January 11, Singh, who belongs to Manipur cadre, had been repatriated to Imphal at the request of the state government.
Singh was Secretary in the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy prior to his repatriation to Manipur.
The development three weeks after the appointment of Vineet Joshi as the Higher Education Secretary at the Centre.
Singh assumes charge as Manipur chief secretary just days after another former bureaucrat AK Bhalla was appointed as the state's governor.
Bhalla was union Home Secretary from 2019 till 2024.
Meanwhile Singh, prior to being Secretary in the New and Renewable Energy Ministry, had served as the Director and CEO of the Government e-Marketplace (GeM), a special purpose vehicle (SPV), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
He has held several key positions in the past, including Chief Executive Officer of the Government e-Marketplace, an initiative under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
Singh holds a degree in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, and a master’s degree in Public Policy and Sustainable Development from TERI University, New Delhi.
The new Chief Secretary assumes his role amid a challenging period for Manipur, which has been grappling with prolonged ethnic and political tensions.
