A 24-year-old undertrial prisoner was killed in a violent assault with fellow inmates inside the Saket Court lock-up on Wednesday. The police believe that the attack stemmed from an old enmity.
The incident took place in Kharja No. 5 of the Saket Court complex where several undertrial prisoners were held prior to their court appearances.
The deceased, identified as Aman, a resident of Govindpuri, Delhi, is facing trial in an attempt to murder case at the Govindpuri police station.
“He was brought to the court for a routine production hearing,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Ankit Chauhan said.
According to the officer, Aman was attacked by two fellow undertrial prisoners – Jitender, alias Jitte, and Jaidev, alias Baccha, - inside the lock-up.
Aman sustained serious injuries during the assault and was immediately sent for a medical examination. However, he later succumbed to his injuries.
Preliminary investigation suggests that the attack stemmed from a previous personal enmity.
The officer said Jitender and Aman had an animosity. In 2024, Aman allegedly assaulted Jitender and his brother with a knife outside the jail premises.
Further investigation is underway. Additional security measures in court lock-ups are expected to be reviewed, the officer said.
