A rare show of unity was witnessed in Delhi’s political circles on Wednesday after Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was allegedly attacked during a public hearing at her residence, prompting strong condemnation from both ruling BJP and Opposition parties.

Recounting the incident, CM Gupta said the assault was not just on her personally but “a cowardly attempt” to weaken her government’s resolve to serve the people of Delhi.

“Naturally, I was in shock after this attack, but now I am feeling better. Such attacks can never break my spirit or my resolve to serve the people. I will soon be working among you again with even more energy and dedication,” she said in a statement.

Delhi BJP leaders expressed outrage over the incident. Minister Parvesh Verma called the attack “a direct assault on democratic values” and said public hearings were meant to connect citizens to governance without fear or obstruction.

Another minister, Kapil Mishra, termed the assault “a heinous attempt” and alleged that the attacker acted with malicious intent. “This attacker cannot be acting alone. The Delhi Police are investigating thoroughly and neither the law nor the people will forgive him,” he said.

Opposition leaders also joined in condemning the attack. AAP National Convener Arvind Kejriwal said: “In a democratic system, differences of opinion are acceptable, but there can be no place for violence. I am confident that the Delhi Police will take appropriate action.” AAP leader and Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Atishi echoed the sentiment, calling for the “strictest action” against those responsible.

The Delhi Congress too expressed concern, with DPCC president Devender Yadav saying the incident highlighted the worsening law and order situation. “Those responsible must face strict punishment, but this also shows that no one is safe in Delhi, not just women. It is time to wake up and prioritise safety,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Police have launched an investigation into the matter, with officials stating that the attacker is being questioned.
