“The Delhi Traffic Police booked 20,009 violators for permit violations, a significant rise from 13,751 in 2023. This marks an increase of nearly 45 per cent in prosecutions compared to the previous year,” the data said.

According to police officials, this surge in number of cases is the result of stricter enforcement measures and a comprehensive strategy targeting non-compliance among commercial vehicle operators.

Specialised teams have been deployed across the city to conduct regular checks at strategic locations, including major intersections, highways and commercial hubs.

“We have emphasised the importance of adhering to permit regulations, as non-compliance poses significant risks to public safety and contributes to traffic-related issues,” a senior police officer said.

The police conducted a thorough analysis of the 10 traffic circles with the highest number of permit violation challans issued up to July 15. This investigation pinpointed specific areas with frequent violations, allowing for targeted enforcement measures to enhance adherence to traffic rules.

The top 10 circles for permit violations this year include Kotwali with 1,406 violations, Daryaganj with 1,279, Civil Lines with 1,263, Madhu Vihar with 1,123, Lajpat Nagar with 1,020, Bhajanpura with 980, Sadar Bazaar with 934, Kamla Market with 802, Karol Bagh with 754 and Nand Nagri with 722.

“The crackdown on permit violations is part of a larger initiative to enhance road safety and reduce traffic congestion,” said the senior police officer.

In response to the increase in prosecutions, the Delhi Traffic Police have launched awareness campaigns to educate vehicle owners and operators about the importance of obtaining and maintaining valid permits. These campaigns aim to inform the public about legal requirements and the consequences of violations, thereby encouraging voluntary compliance.

“The surge in prosecutions is expected to continue as we aim to sustain the momentum of the enforcement drive,” the officials added.
