Rescue operation under way as minor falls in sewer in Delhi

A rescue operation is in progress in Vasant Kunj, southwest Delhi, after a minor fell into an open sewer while playing on Thursday afternoon.

According to the police, a PCR call was received at Vasant Kunj South police station around 1.24 pm, alerting authorities that a child had fallen into a sewer.

Acting on the call, a police team, along with other rescue agencies, rushed to the location, a police officer said.

Local children who witnessed the incident alerted nearby residents, who contacted the police. The rescue effort is being treated as a top priority, with multiple agencies working together, the cop mentioned.

A JCB machine is being used to clear the sewer, and a fire tender with four personnel from the Vasant Kunj fire station is on the scene to assist. The District Disaster Management Authority team, including trained divers, is also part of the operation. Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) personnel and sanitation workers are supporting the rescue efforts, an official said.

The incident happened near Shiv Mandir, Rajokri village, close to the MCD School. The sewer, which belongs to the MCD, was found to be open on the side.

The boy's identity and that of his parents are still unknown. All teams are working together to locate and rescue the boy, the official added.

As of now, the identity of the child or parents, guardians could not be ascertained and no missing report has been lodged at the police station so far, it was mentioned.

The sewer belongs to the MCD and was found open from where the child might have slipped into it.
