Sharing details regarding the initiative, Dr Shiv Singh Rawat, associated with the KBC Welfare Society, said the event was organised in association with Saukhyam, an NGO. He said the main aim of the function was to create awareness amongst the younger generations about the importance of maintaining good hygiene and health and the need for the promotion of reusable sanitary pads among the girls and women hailing from semi-urban and rural areas.

Rawat added that while maintaining menstrual hygiene was of immense importance, the use of sanitary napkins, which contain non-biodegradable plastic, had to be shunned to save the environment. A woman could dispose of approximately 125 kg of non-biodegradable waste just by using disposable sanitary napkins during her menstrual life, he said, quoting a report. The pads prepared by Saukhyam, an award-winning NGO, are made of banana fibre and have a cloth covering. He said the NGO’s and the organisation’s work in the health sector aimed not only at promoting the usage of reusable sanitary pads on a larger scale but also at spreading awareness to counter the threat of health disorders.
