The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the much-awaited Rithala-Narela-Nathupur corridor as part of the Delhi Metro’s Phase IV project on Friday.

The 26.463-km corridor aims to enhance connectivity between Delhi and neighbouring Haryana, benefiting lakhs of residents in the national capital’s north-western regions and beyond.

The Rithala-Narela-Nathupur corridor, set to be completed within four years at a cost of Rs 6,230 crore, will be developed by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited (DMRC), which operates under a 50:50 partnership between the Government of India and the Government of Delhi. This new metro extension will not only extend the existing Red Line, but also connect various underserved areas such as Narela, Bawana, Rohini and parts of Haryana.

The new corridor will comprise 21 stations, all of them elevated. It will connect key locations such as Rithala, Rohini sectors, Bawana Industrial Area and Narela, ultimately linking Nathupur in Haryana with Shaheed Sthal New Bus Adda station in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. This connectivity will significantly enhance travel options for thousands of people living in Delhi and surrounding areas.

At present, residents of Narela and Bawana face difficulties in accessing public transport options, and the new metro line promises to address these challenges. The extension of the Red Line will not only alleviate road congestion but also reduce pollution caused by motor vehicles.

North West Delhi MP Yogendra Chandolia welcomed the decision, calling it a “big gift” for the people of Narela and Bawana. “For years, people in these areas have been waiting for the Metro to reach their neighbourhoods. Now, their dreams have come true. This Metro extension will directly benefit lakhs of people,” he said.

Chandolia said the Phase IV project would further strengthen connectivity in the region. “This phase will link Rithala with Sonipat, Kundli Border and Nathupur, passing through 21 stations, including Bawana Industrial Area, JJ Colony, and multiple sectors in Rohini. It’s a game-changer for the region,” he said.

The new metro corridor will also be Delhi Metro’s fourth extension into Haryana, with previous expansions to Gurugram, Ballabhgarh and Bahadurgarh. Once completed, it will be a key component of the broader Phase IV project, which includes three priority corridors, covering 65.202 kms with 45 stations. The entire Phase IV project is expected to be completed by March 2026.

As of today, Delhi Metro operates 12 metro lines, totaling 392 kms and serving 288 stations across Delhi and NCR. The system, which serves over 64 lakh passenger journeys on an average daily, has become the lifeline of the city, setting standards for punctuality, reliability, and safety.
