Row over inauguration of Ashok Vihar MCD school
New Delhi, July 18
Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi announced the upcoming inauguration of a state-of-the-art school in Ashok Vihar C-2, Keshav Puram Zone, in a press conference on Thursday. The new school, featuring 14 classrooms and specialised facilities including nursery rooms, a computer room, library, medical room, and sports room, is set to open within the next 10 days.
However, the BJP’s Leader of Opposition in MCD, Raja Iqbal Singh, accused the AAP of taking undue credit for projects initiated during the BJP’s tenure. Singh stated, “The schools inaugurated over the past two years were built during the BJP’s tenure. The work orders for these schools were issued under the BJP government, and the funds were sanctioned by us. The AAP government has not contributed even a bit to the construction of these schools.”
Meanwhile, emphasising the critical role of education, Mayor Oberoi stated, “The MCD has approximately 1,500 schools. In just 1.5 years, AAP’s MCD government is all set to inaugurate the third school. Last year, we inaugurated two MCD schools, the first at Vishnu Garden in the West Zone and the second at Bawana in the Narela Zone. Now, the third school is being inaugurated in Ashok Vihar in the coming ten days.”Raja Iqbal elaborated that during the BJP government in all three previous corporations, schools were built on a mission mode.
“Construction of permanent buildings for schools that were running in Pota Cabin was started. Under this, the work order for the MCD school in Vishnu Garden was issued on January 4, 2020, during the BJP’s rule, with an amount of Rs 1.84 crore sanctioned,” he said. Similarly, the proposal to build the MCD school in Bawana with an amount of Rs 1.82 crore was approved by the BJP government, and its work order was issued on March 7, 2022. The school in Ashok Vihar C-2, which the mayor plans to inaugurate, also had a fund of Rs 3.2 crore sanctioned by our BJP government, he recounted.
Singh also criticised the AAP government for the delay in forming a standing committee, which has hindered various development projects. “Due to political animosity, many works are pending. The public is tired of visiting the offices of MLAs and councillors for the repair of drains and streets, but due to the lack of approval from the Standing Committee, the work is not being done.”
