Sachdeva welcomes changes in Delhi Assembly’s functioning
Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva has welcomed the recent discussions in the Delhi Assembly, including the return of Private Members’ Day and the productive Question Hour. He highlighted that these changes were a much-needed shift after a decade of what he described as distortion and manipulation of the Assembly’s functioning by the Arvind Kejriwal-led government and the former Speaker.
Sachdeva said over the last 10 years, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had turned the Delhi Assembly into a platform solely serving its own political interests, ignoring the rights of opposition MLAs. He emphasised that the previous Speaker and the government had twisted Assembly rules to the extent that most MLAs were unaware of their rights within the House. “The Assembly became a space for political commentary rather than for addressing real issues affecting Delhi,” he said.
The Delhi BJP president also criticised the violation of constitutional procedures, especially the improper adjourning of Assembly sessions, which he said disrupted the functioning of the legislature. “For the past decade, constitutional procedures were sidelined, and the Assembly was reduced to a political stage rather than a
legislative forum,” Sachdeva added.
