New Delhi, March 6
As farmers resumed their ‘Delhi Chalo’ march on Wednesday, the Delhi Police once again heightened security in the borders areas of the national capital.
Farmers from various states are expected to take part in the protests and hold a protest in Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. The call was given by the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) and the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (non-political) three days ago. The Delhi Police had increased security at the Tikri, Singhu and Ghazipur borders in view of their call.
Since February 13, the farmers have camped at multiple areas on the borders of the national capital. They are demanding a legal guarantee for the minimum support price (MSP) for crops, pension for farmers and farm labourers, farm debt waiver and no hike in electricity tariffs.
The Central Government has held multiple rounds of negotiations with farmer leaders but the talks have failed to come to a conclusion.
On February 18, a panel of three union ministers had made an offer to buy Security heightened after farmers’ call to protest…
five crops — moong dal, urad dal, tur dal, maize, and cotton — from farmers at MSP for five years through various central agencies. However, the protesting farmers turned down the offer and resumed protests.
Punjab Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee head Sarwan Singh Pandher alleged, “Around 130 farmers have been detained. In Rajasthan, approximately 100 prominent farm leaders were also detained yesterday. Besides, some farmers were arrested from a train in Madhopur.”
“One thing is clear that the Central Government is determined to prevent farmers from reaching Delhi,” Pandher added.
