Smart classrooms slowly transforming learning in Delhi govt schools
Rs 900-crore project to set up 19,000 new classrooms by 2030
While many Delhi Government schools still lack smart classrooms, those equipped with smart boards are witnessing a visible transformation in teaching and learning.
A visit by The Tribune to several schools revealed that smart classrooms have made lessons more engaging where implemented. At Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya, Mukherjee Nagar, teachers said the smart boards had helped them make lessons more interactive. “Earlier, many of us were not very comfortable with technology. But after proper training, we now use smart boards in almost every class. It helps us explain topics more clearly and students find the lessons interesting and easy to follow,” said a teacher.
Awadhesh Jha, Principal of Sarvodaya School, Rohini, added, “Sometimes small technical glitches or software issues occur, but they are solved on time. The smart boards are very helpful for students and teachers as well.”
Students, too, appreciate the change. “I like studying on the smart board because we can see pictures and videos. It makes learning fun, especially in science,” said a Class V student.
However, many schools, including Government Senior Secondary School, Burari, Government Senior Secondary Girls’ School, Burari, and Sarvodaya Vidyalaya, Banda Bahadur Marg, still do not have smart classroom facilities.
Recognising this gap, the Delhi Government has launched a major initiative to expand digital learning infrastructure. Between 2014 and 2024, only 799 smart blackboards were installed in government schools.
In July 2025, the Delhi Cabinet approved a Rs 900 crore plan to set up nearly 19,000 new smart classrooms. The first phase will see 2,446 smart blackboards installed in 75 “CM Shri Schools”, with a target of reaching 21,412 smart classrooms by the 2029–30 academic year.
While most government schools are yet to benefit from the facilities, those that have already adopted smart technology are showing clear advantages.
