Delhi Municipal Corporation LoP and former Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh accused AAP of employing “various tactics to prevent the formation of the Standing Committee and hinder Delhi’s development”. Singh said AAP feared a BJP victory and was attempting to delay the crucial municipal elections and obstruct the city’s progress.

Development has taken a back seat

“Yesterday, AAP leaders were eager for elections, but today they’ve reversed their stance and approached court,” he said. He added that AAP’s shifting position reflected their anxiety over BJP’s potential success in the upcoming elections. “AAP leaders are losing sleep over the possibility of a BJP victory,” he added.

Singh said AAP first went to the High Court to contest the victory of three BJP members in the Standing Committee, only to lose. “They even challenged the L-G’s appointment of Aldermen in the Supreme Court, but the Supreme Court upheld the decision. The ruling party is clearly getting desperate,” the MCD LoP added.

As avenues closed, Singh said the Mayor was forced to schedule elections for the Ward Committees and Standing Committee. However, with the Municipal Secretary now having announced election dates, Singh accused AAP of using their councillors as pawns to delay the process.

“AAP has no interest in Delhi’s development. For 18 months, they blocked the formation of Standing Committee, halting all developmental activities,” he stated.

Singh also targeted AAP for undermining Delhi’s cleanliness system. “Now that the time for Ward Committees’ nominations is approaching, AAP councillors are pretending to be ill,” he said, accusing them of making excuses to avoid the elections.

Despite AAP’s alleged manoeuvres, Singh expressed confidence in BJP’s readiness for the elections. “The BJP welcomes the dates set by the Municipal Commissioner for the Ward Committees’ elections. We will file nominations for our candidates on Friday and contest all 12 zones,” he said, adding that the saffron party would win the elections.

Singh also criticised the absence of Ward Committees under AAP’s governance, which he argued had severely impacted Delhi’s municipal services. “Under AAP’s protection, corruption has increased at the ward level. By not forming Ward Committees and Standing Committee, AAP wants to continue this corruption,” he said
