The Delhi Government has issued strict directives to private unaided recognised schools, barring them from compelling parents and students to buy books, uniforms and study materials from specific vendors. The move follows several complaints from parents about being forced to purchase costly items from designated suppliers.

Education Minister Ashish Sood emphasised that such practices place an undue financial burden on families. “In several schools, students are being compelled to buy books, notebooks, ties, belts and uniforms from specific vendors. This is unacceptable. Every student must have the freedom to purchase educational material from a place of their choice,” he said.

He said transparency in school expenses was crucial. “Private schools must display the list of prescribed books, uniforms and educational materials in public areas within their premises and on their official websites. Any institution found concealing this information or misleading parents will face strict legal action,” he warned.

The guidelines, issued by the Directorate of Education, aim to curb financial exploitation by schools and ensure fair practices. The minister made it clear that no student should be forced to purchase study materials beyond the prescribed curriculum. “Education should not be turned into a business where parents are pressured into spending beyond their means,” he added.

The Delhi Government has urged parents to report any violations to the Nodal Officer, Manish Jain, Deputy Director of Education (PSB), through email at ddeact1@gmail.com or through the helpline number 9818154069. Officials have assured that any school found violating the rules will face consequences under the Delhi School Education Act, 1973.
